Ed Drake & Pam Thorburn grab gold in Tignes

ED DRAKE & PAM THORBURN GRAB GOLD IN TIGNES

The BRITS Snow & Music Festival, 21st – 28th March 2015, Tignes, France

The BRITS 2015 kicked off in incredible style as Ed Drake tore through the competition to make three-peat history, whilst Pam Thorburn picked up the women's crown under blue skies at the British Skiercross championships.

A scorcher of a day in Tignes, France was the perfect backdrop for a day of nail-biting racing action,  with skiers of all ages taking to the freshly shaped cross course. Skiers first flew down the course to set their fastest qualifying times, before the 4x4 races began to separate the fast, from the true skiercross royalty!

In the overall men’s category one man stood head and shoulders above the rest yet again. Ed Drake only needed one of his runs to put himself more than a second ahead in qualification, before a flawless run through the 4x4 races saw him take home the gold medal for the third year and the historic three-peat.  Sam Gerrett, for the second year in a row, was just short of Drake all day. Although he couldn't  quite match the man in front, he still put in a stellar performance to convert his great qualifying pace into a 2nd silver medal in 2 years. Sam Allen proved that he was capable of stepping up his game throughout the day to close out the podium. Moving up from 6th in qualifying, to 3rd overall, Allen proved that you need more than raw speed to succeed in the head to head combat of cross racing.

Stoked on his third BRITS title, Drake commented: “it was a good, fun competition. We had a few more guys here than last year so it’s great that it’s always growing. The course held up really well, especially with how warm it was. Next year, it would be great if it was bigger!”

Ladies qualifying was separated by a hairs breadth as favourite Pam Thorburn stole away the top seed spot from Emma Peters by mere tenths of a second. The first choice of gate in the final proved to be divisive, as  the 27 year old Scot took the gold medal in style before heading straight back to Italy for more intensive training. Pushing Thorburn all the way was 17 year old phenom Emma Peters, who hung onto her 2nd place in qualifying to claim the 2015 silver, matching the one she won exactly a year before. Beside Emma on the podium was another teenage sensation in the form of Andrea Seaton, who also matched her 2014 performance to claim bronze.

Pam was understandably amped on the win and tweeted her excitement whilst on the road: “Hells yeh!! Great trip to Tignes. Proud to be British Ski Cross Champion 2015. Cool to see so much young talent and everyone getting stoked on Ski X. Another best day.”

The BRITS continues to cultivate incredible up and coming talent, and this year proved that the current crop of Skiercross groms will be taking on the world! A huge number of kids and teenagers took to the course, including a record breaking number of entries for the under 16 men's contest. Making his way through qualifications and three rounds of racing was Matthew Ray, taking the spoils in the most well subscribed category of the day. Shining on the girls side was 11 year old Elektra Brown, whose qualifying run put many of the adults to shame and made sure she took the Under 12's category Gold.
